Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out to the east of a gravel quarry plant site. A Roman road, a settlement and scattered cremations and burials had been recorded during previous evaluations in the vicinity. During the 1995 evaluation, at least twenty 2nd century AD ditches, probably representing small fields and paddocks, were revealed. These conformed fairly closely to a pattern of cropmarks identified on aerial photographs. A large pit and four inhumations, at least three of which were in coffins, were also found. It was concluded that activity at the site pre-dated the main settlement area along the Roman road. [AIP] |
