Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation, consisting of five trial trenches, was undertaken in response to a condition attached to outline planning consent for the erection of a retail scheme. The evaluation exercise provided an invaluable insight into the archaeological resource of the site, demonstrating that the remains were of varying quality and quantity. Certainly the western edge of the site demonstrated a high archaeological potential, with good palaeo-environmental date, indicators for a variety of industries and rich artefact assemblages. In areas to the east of the Blackfriars Road frontage the archaeological features identified were of massive proportions and enjoyed the protection of over one metre of archaeologically sterile overburden.
