Abstract:
A programme of archaeological work during restoration at Painswick Beacon, Painswick, Gloucestershire, was undertaken. Kimsbury Camp is a multivallate hillfort considered to date to the Middle Iron Age and is protected as a Scheduled Monument (SM 51). A combination of visitors and weather had caused significant erosion scars on the west facing ramparts. This prompted a scheme of works to repair the erosion scars and prevent further damage occurring to the monument. In the majority of the required excavations no significant archaeological deposits or features were encountered. However, in one of the repair platforms (27) part of the rampart construction was exposed and recorded. Local limestone had been used to form a vertical revetment with layers of redeposited stone and clay packed behind it. Successive layers of limestone rubble, considered to be another undated phase of construction, sealed the earlier phase of the rampart construction, however, all phases remain undated. Small fragments of Iron Age pottery were recovered from disturbed deposits at the southern end of the site but these were associated with modern artefacts. [Au(abr)]
