Abstract: |
The archaeological assessment of the site of a proposed waste water collection building was undertaken, the construction of which would require the laying of a pipeline from the existing Weymouth Headworks to a new building. The proposal area lay along the north shore of the Fleet, a part of coastal Dorset which was farmed extensively in the Roman period, features from this period had been previously identified within the appraisal area. The study demonstrated that the site lay in an area which had been occupied since the Mesolithic period, highlighted by the presence of flint and chert implements, and that the potential existed for the survival of Iron Age, Romano-British, Anglo-Saxon and medieval settlement.
