Abstract:
The origins of the Dymchurch Wall may have been traced back to the late 13th century. The limit of this protective barrier therefore remained virtually unaltered for 700 years. The man-made sea defence and the natural shingle spit on which it came to be sites was a major factor in the reclamation, draining and formation of the rich lands of the Romney Marsh. The proposed development would have maintained this effective barrier but in the course of its construction may reveal or destroy former elements of the sea defence system including the groynes and breakwaters. This desk-based assessment showed that the immediate hinterland around the study area was likely to have contained archaeological deposits of the Roman, medieval and post-medieval eras. Therefore, it was these three periods which had the highest potential for discovery within this section of the High Knocke to Dymchurch Redoubt Scheme Development. [Au(adp)]
