Abstract: |
The assessment was undertaken in relation to the proposed construction of new District Council Offices and public library. There was documentary evidence for occupation in St Andrew Street from the 13th century. Late medieval and post-medieval documents suggested associations with merchants and artisans involved in the cloth industry. Remains of buildings associated with the Angel Inn potentially survived beneath the pavilion, the present parking area and garage. The earliest standing building appeared to the substantial remains of an early 18th-century house comprising the rear of nos. 9-10 St Andrew St. The remaining buildings were all of late 18th century date which, as a group, contributed to the character of the Conservation Area.
