Abstract:
Eckington Bridge is a Scheduled Ancient Monument (County Monument No: Hereford & Worcester 319) of post-medieval construction (1728), although it is built in a medieval style. In March 1993 a tractor demolished a length of the northern parapet, knocking many of the stones into the River Avon. The County Archaeological Service (CAS) provided advice to the County Engineering Department (CED) with respect to the historical aspects of the reconstruction, making use of an earlier (December 1988) photographic record of the bridge. In the first instance the CAS prepared an elevation of the exterior of the damaged parapet at a scale of 1:50 following an inspection of the site and examination of photographs provided by the CED for the purposes of an application for Scheduled Monument Consent. Whilst the procedures for consent were underway the CED produced an elevation at a larger scale of 1:12.5 for the dual purposes of pre-cutting of any necessary replacement stone and for the repair work on site. An exploration of the documentary history of the site was also undertaken by the CAS, to supplement the drawn record. The work undertaken has resulted in a better understanding of this monument.[AIP]
