Abstract: |
The evaluation found that the only recognisable archaeological activity was related to the construction of the branch of the Stockton and Darlington Railway. A deep track bed was cut through the sand and into the clay subsoil, and was ballasted with compacted clay and mudstone. No rails or sleepers were recorded in situ, suggesting the permanent way had been lifted subsequent to its abandonment. The earliest significant activity consisted of pits that contained waterlogged wood dated to AD 1040 to 1260. [Au(abr)] |
