Abstract:
An evaluation was carried out at the proposed site of a residential development, where a number of features had been identified during an earlier walkover survey. Ridge and furrow, a number of pond features, former field boundaries and a possible hollow way, which were thought likely to have formed part of the medieval landscape, had been recorded. During the evaluation, a pond and a possible hearth were revealed. The recovery of a clamped brick from the fill of the latter suggested an early 19th century date, whilst the presence of slag may have indicated small-scale metalworking activity in the area. The absence of medieval finds and the recovery of a small assemblage of post-medieval artefacts from the topsoil suggested that the ridge and furrow could be dated to the post-medieval period. The possible hollow way was investigated, but the absence of any cut, levelling material for a surface or post-use silting-up deposits suggested that the feature may instead have been associated with ridge and furrow to the north; it may have represented a negative lynchet. It was concluded that the site evaluated did not merit further archaeological investigation. However, one of the two fields which comprised the proposal area had not been accessible for trial trenching, and it was recommended that a small-scale evaluation should be conducted within this field prior to any development.
