Abstract:
The watching brief was undertaken during the alterations and rear extensions to the existing properties. The SE end of the longitudinal trench butted up to an existing C19th rear wing of the adjoining property to the SE. This had been built on 3 courses of C19 brick below ground level, and large stone boulders. These in turn had been lain directly over a floor of brick, laid on a sandy bed. The bricks were not normal pavoirs but were of soft red bricks of narrow depth, similar to bricks in regular use in the C17. It was just possible that a C17 brick building had been demolished and the bricks recovered for use as pavoirs for a floor of a building preceding the later C19 standing rear wind. The bed of the brick floor lay directly on natural blue-gay clay with flints and water worn boulders of chalk. The clay had been penetrated in two places by round stakes approximately 130mm in diameter, probably of softwood, suggesting a former timber fence. Away from the standing building, the new footings trench passed through loose rubble make-up of some depth, directly over the natural clay. This extended across the whole site, interrupted only by various drains and inspection chambers, and above this there was a floor of seriously over-burned brick. Towards the NW end of the trench, a lower occupation level was encountered, consisting of a blackish organic deposit. The extent of this could not be ascertained due to disturbances. The items found in the bottom layer indicated that it was of 18th or early 19th century date. [Au(adp)]
