Abstract: |
The desktop assessment identified that the proposed development site lay within an area of considerable archaeological potential. The study area seemed to have one of the highest concentrations of prehistoric and Romano-British sites in the county. These had probably been encouraged by the proximity of the Iron Age hillfort of Winklebury and a major Roman road. The study also showed that the site lay in the southwest corner of the former common fields of Sherborne St John from the medieval period until their enclosure in 1832. The site was also immediately adjacent to both the parish boundary between Sherborne St John and Basingstoke, and the eastern pale of the medieval deer park of Privet (now Park Prewett). [Au(abr)] |
