Abstract: |
Four trenches were excavated on land to the east of Dever Close. A small number of features were found dating to the Saxon, medieval and post-medieval periods. The Saxon evidence included early Saxon pottery and a pit containing iron slag and a Frisian comb and threw light on a period in the history of Micheldever, when it was thought to have been a Saxon estate centre. The medieval and post-medieval evidence was probably associated with the nearby house which belonged to the New Minster (later renamed Hyde Abbey) in Winchester from the 10th century, finally becoming the mansion of the Earls of Southampton at the dissolution.
