Abstract:
An excavation was conducted in advance of proposed development. A significant amount of flint was recovered. This was residual, recovered from medieval and later deposits. The assemblage may have indicated settlement nearby. The extent of the medieval occupation included features and deposits identifiable as rubbish pits, layers of soil and waste tipping, gullies and ditches, as well as stone filled areas, boundary walls and palisades and a possible smithy or metal working area. A significant assemblage of pottery and animal bone was recovered from these features and layers. Metal objects including iron and bronze were also recovered. It was concluded that the excavation covered the area at the back of the medieval houses, where craft and industrial activities as well as general refuse disposal took place. Features including walls and column bases of the 19th century St. Mary's Cathedral were precisely located. Other possible pits and features were also attributed to this phase of activity and possibly to the earlier St. Mary's Chapel. [Au(abr)]
