Abstract: |
A desk based assessment of the proposed site of a wine museum within an Archaeological Priority Zone was undertaken. Prehistoric occupation evidence and several major Roman structures had been discovered in the surrounding area. In medieval times, the site lay within the garden of the scheduled Winchester Palace complex. The site of the 16th-17th century Globe Theatre, also a Scheduled Ancient Monument, lay to the west. Post-medieval tenements, warehouses and a prison had lain on the site, which was crossed by a 19th century railway viaduct. It was concluded that an archaeological evaluation would probably be necessary. [Au(adp)] |
