Abstract:
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during the construction of two new footpaths to the east and northeast of the castle, and the excavation of a cable trench. Trench 1 revealed a substantial masonry wall (1005), suggesting the presence of a building or a boundary wall. A line of stone rubble at 90 degrees to this wall could have been the remains of a less substantial or at least more truncated wall aligned upon 1005. The wall (1005) appeared to be post-dated by a series of deliberate dumps of stone roof tile followed by stone building material. These layers could have suggested the presence of a building in this area, but could equally have been derived from the castle and have been dumped against an existing boundary wall. The wall could not be directly dated by associated finds, although post-medieval ceramics in the topsoil suggested that it was at least earlier than the mid-17th century, although it was possible that this material was residual, and not necessarily deposited in the 17th century. In trench 2 residual stone building material was also apparent, some of which appeared to have been re-used in conjunction with large ceramic tiles to create a paved area relatively recently. No in situ archaeological features were disturbed during the excavation of this trench, [Au(adp)]
