Abstract: |
The assessment of the site indicated that the site was certainly developed by 1568 and possibly from a much earlier date. It had been suggested that an almshouse first built in 1686 was rebuilt in 1725; however there was no evidence to suggest that this rebuild amounted to more than extending the original premises to provide an additional four rooms. It was likely that two buildings immediately behind the Old Market Street frontage were the original 1686 buildings. After the almshouse was destroyed by enemy action in 1940 the site was subsequently cleared and a new almshouse built. [Au(adp)] |
