Abstract: |
Archaeological recording of a pit excavated by contractors during construction works at the Castle Hotel was undertaken. The pit was located within the line of the moat of Taunton Castle, adjacent to the East Gate. The pit appeared to have cut into the upper levels of infill within the moat, to a depth of approximately 0.80m. The late 16th century date of pottery recovered from the fills accorded with the known date of the final infilling of the moat evidenced from previous observations. Two possible pits and a wall, possibly the sub-surface footing of a post-medieval building, were also observed. [AIP] |
