Abstract: |
A preliminary assessment was undertaken of Wharncliffe Chase, Wharncliffe Wood and Greno Wood, areas which had been included in a scheme proposed for the creation of a South Yorkshire Forest. The area had been the subject of intense archaeological interest for a number of years, including excavation work between 1945 and 1975 by L H Butcher and his colleagues, excavation of the important Deepcar Mesolithic site in the early 1960's and survey work by M E Wright on the quern quarries and evidence of medieval and post-medieval activity in the area.
