Abstract:
In December 1996 the Transport and Estates Department of Cornwall County Council funded a second stage of archaeological recording prior to the start of the Stage 2 construction work at the Liskeard Junior and Infant School playing field. Previous archaeological work on the site had led to the identification and excavation of a large enclosure ditch. A subsequent geophysical survey of the playing field revealed that the circuit of the ditch was much larger than had been expected, and that it probably encircled much of the hilltop. The CAU monitored the Stage 2 topsoil stripping and recorded the exposed features over a five day period. The enclosure ditch was the earliest feature on the site. The majority of the other features were found to contain artefacts of medieval or later date. However the excavated section through the enclosure ditch produced several sherds of probable Bronze Age pottery. The results of the fieldwork at Liskeard were exciting because they indicated that the hilltop had probably been enclosed during the Bronze Age. Large enclosure sites dating to that period are extremely rare, and none had been identified in Cornwall before. [Au]
