Abstract: |
Rescue excavations in St Mary Magdalen's churchyard and adjacent land revealed the remains of a small medieval hospital, and recorded the stages in its transition to a post-medieval almshouse. A religious institution founded as a refuge for lepers in the early 12th century, the hospital's original accommodation included an infirmary hall and a timber outbuilding. In the mid-13th century the main quarters were relocated to a site in the northern area of the grounds, when St Mary Magdalen's church was built on part of the original infirmary hall. Foundations projecting from the south side of the church were thought to have belonged to a chapel for hospital inmates, used from the 13th century onward. The main hospital building to the north was later joined by a second block which remained in use as an almshouse until demolished in 1832. Features recorded during the excavation included 234 medieval and post-medieval graves, ditches which appeared to have formed a boundary between the hospital and the churchyard, quarry and waste pits, and a line of post-pits which had probably hosted boundary posts. A total of 4381 sherds of medieval and post-medieval pottery, weighing 78kg, were recovered. Architectural fragments and other artefacts were also found. [Au(adp)] |
