Abstract: |
A second stage of field evaluation was undertaken at the proposed site of a Tesco superstore to investigate the western part of the site. The evaluation ran concurrently with an open-area excavation of a Middle to Late Iron Age settlement discovered during the Stage 1 evaluation. A small number of curvilinear ditches and a pit were revealed. Significant quantities of East Midlands Scored Ware, and iron working slag were recovered. A group of linear Iron Age features was also excavated. It was considered likely that the Iron Age deposits discovered represented peripheral activity associated with the Iron Age settlement being excavated nearby at the same time, rather than a separate settlement focus. Further work was considered necessary. [Au(abr)] |
