Abstract:
The desk-based assessment considered the archaeological potential of the site, and the likely impact on this of the proposed demolition of the existing telephone exchange building and its replacement by a single residential building sub-divided into flats, with car-parking to rear. Probable archaeological deposits and features consisted, in summary, of medieval and post-medieval pits, ditches and possible structures, relating to the early development of Hampton village. Attention was drawn to inconclusive evidence suggesting the possible existence of a non-conformist burial ground in the vicinity of the 'garden plot' to the rear of the site. The principle impact of the proposed works was unclear at present, in the absence of foundation and surfacing design details for the scheme, or confirmation of archaeological survival from on-site trial work. Impacts are likely to be most severe in the area of the proposed new residential block, where lift pits and new foundations will be inserted. New services, petrol interceptors and surfaces in the roadway on the south side of the site and in the car park to the rear had potential impacts on archaeology, their severity depending on the intended construction levels and design. The report concluded that further investigation (field evaluation) may be necessary to determine the exact nature and depth of such deposits. [Au(abr)]
