Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during the groundworks associated with the construction of an extension to No. 2 New Road. A brick-lined pit with an arched roof of brick, probably a cistern dating to the 19th century, was recorded. The fill contained two carved sandstone keystones depicting stylised lions. These originated on the west-facing elevation of No. 2 New Road. A number of layers of archaeological deposits were recorded in two trial-pits. Though no finds were recovered, these deposits were probably medieval or post-medieval in date. [Au(abr)] |
