Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken in advance of redevelopment. On the basis of the evidence available it appeared that the assessment site had potential for remains dating to the medieval and post-medieval periods, relating to the development of the parish of Tottenham. The principal importance of the site was that it was potentially the location of a substantial Tudor and medieval house, known as the Old Parsonage (also referred to as Rectory House). The surrounding area had a wealth of historic importance dating from the time of the Conquest onwards, including a vicarage and several moated manor houses. The parish of Tottenham remained relatively undeveloped until quite recently (the 1930s) with most settlement concentrated around the High Road (the ancient Ermine Street). Fryatt road itself did not exist until c.1935. The land to the east of the Old Parsonage still remained undeveloped as parkland. Thus the potential for preservation of remains relating to the medieval period onwards was good. Little in the way of archaeological remains dating to other earlier periods had been detected in the vicinity of the site, and prehistoric evidence was derived from sites further east particularly around the river Lea.
