Abstract: |
<summary>The proposal to construct a pair of semi-detached cottages led to an archaeological assessment. The town of Lydford is historically very important. It dates back to at least the 9th century, when it was a fortified burh with its own mint. Later a Norman castle was built and it was also the site of the prison and courts. The settlement dwindled after the 1850s, which may have resulted in the preservation of the archaeology due to fewer building and housing pressures. It was therefore recommended that the building foundations should be dug and fully recorded by archaeologists. {italon}AIP {italoff} |
