Abstract: |
The watching brief revealed the possible line of a part of a back-filled Civil War entrenchment towards the west part of the Palace Gardens. The site of the ditch feature compares reasonably well with the defensive line plotted between the redoubt and battery on Constitution Hill and the Court of Guard at Chelsey Turnpike. Traces of garden landscaping and alterations of probable 18th-19th century date were observed in the form of a garden or terrace wall. A substantial brick arched conduit or culvert was testimony to water management within the formal gardens in this period. [Au(abr)] |
