Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out on a major reconstruction scheme to Berwick Quayside, following major collapses of the quay wall. This work included the observation during digging of a long drainage trench. Four culverts were revealed two of which still function as sewers. One of these may relate to the first construction of this part of the Quay in c1760. Another important feature was the finding of the end wall of the Quay before its extension in c1760. A mortared platform, possibly a pre 1800 quay surface was recovered as well as remains from 19th century buildings. [AIP] |
