Abstract: |
The assessment site lay within the Covent Garden Conservation Area and included three Listed Buildings and lay in the Archaeological Priority Area Lundenwic in the Unitary Development Plan. There was little evidence for prehistoric or Roman occupation in the immediate area but the site lay on the edge of the important Middle Saxon settlement of Lundenwic. An archaeological evaluation, consisting of trial pitting, undertaken of the site had revealed archaeological deposits extending to a depth of 2.25-2.7 metres below the slab in the unbasemented area at 4 Floral Street. Elsewhere on the southern part of the site, surfaces and deposits were found to extend below the single basement slabs and there were some localised deeper 'cut features' such as graves and pits.
