Abstract: |
A cultural heritage assessment, which accompanied a planning application to use an area currently under pasture as a borrow pit in connection with the ongoing improvement works to the adjacent A66 road some 2km west of its junction with the A1, was carried out. The assessment identified six sites of local significance and one site of possible regional significance that would be directly impacted by the proposed development. One buried site of national importance, a section of the Scot's Dike, an early medieval earthwork, lay sufficiently close to the western site boundary that its setting would be visually impacted by the development. It was concluded that the area contained remains of sufficient significance to warrant mitigation by avoidance and preservation in situ. The only regionally significant site to be impacted by the development was a trackway and field boundary marking territorial divisions between Melsonby and Middleton Tyas townships/parishes and between Gilling West and Gilling East wapentakes. Although its preservation was poor, it was recommended to investigate further. [Au(adp)] |
