Abstract: |
The evaluation of the proposed development site was completed through two trenches. The trenches contained twenty features, of which twelve were a product of modern disturbance. The archeological features consisted of a medieval ditch, possibly part of a burgage boundary. Three post-medieval pits were identified and one undated pit. A post-medieval limestone wall, floor and drain were uncovered. The possible line of Saxon defences, which are postulated to run near the development area, was not present within the two trenches. At the time of writing, the consensus was that the burgh ditch ran along the 50m contour and the site was just below this level. The possibility of an earlier burial ground/church on the site of the present Baptist chapel was not confirmed. [Au(abr)] |
