Abstract:
Desk-based assessment and a walkover survey of a proposed residential development site identified that no evidence of activity pre-dating Merebrooksough Lead Mine had been recorded within the survey area. The remains of the mine, which dated from the late-18th to the mid-19th centuries, comprised an engine house, a miners' hut and three capped shafts. These structures were Grade II Listed Buildings. In the surrounding area, the earliest recorded sites were findspots of Roman coins and pottery. A 13th century church with a churchyard cross lay in the vicinity, and a coffin lid found near the altar had been dated to c. 800 AD. Late medieval and post-medieval buildings had been recorded in the area. Cartographic evidence indicated that the proposal site had lain within an area of open fields until mining had commenced in the 18th century. It was concluded that the site could be divided into six zones of differing archaeological potential, ranging from an area of former allotments which had remained relatively undisturbed to an area where a high degree of disturbance had been caused by pitting, marked on a map of 1880 but apparently levelled by 1898. Archaeological mitigation measures were recommended for three of the zones. [AIP]
