Abstract: |
An archaeoloigcal desk-based assessment was undertaken of the site prior to its proposed redevelopment. The report identified a potential for Roman remains across the site. Roman funerary urns had been found in an unspecified location along Eldon Street in 1836, while more recent excavations had revealed further inhumations and cremation in the immediate vicinity. Traces of an east-west Roman road surface had also been recorded in the immediate vicinity. The report concluded that, although the archaeological strata would have been largely removed by the basement of the existing building, the proposed works may involve the removal of archaeological remains of the Roman periods which may have survived beneath the modern basement slab. The report suggested that further archaeologial evaluation work may be necessary to determine the exact nature and depth of such deposits. [Au(adp)] |
