Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment of a proposed British Gas pipeline collected and collated information on 211 archaeological sites and findspots/scatters within a 1km study corridor centred on the pipeline route. Each site was placed into one of five categories (A-E), ranging from Scheduled Ancient Monument to single findspots. Few prehistoric sites were recorded, although a possible Long Barrow (Scheduled) did lie particularly close to the proposed pipeline route. A similar paucity of Roman sites was recorded, although the Scheduled Car Dyke was crossed by the proposed route. Most of the important sites related to the Middle Ages, the majority comprising deserted and shrunken medieval settlements, or religious establishments. [Au(adp)] |
