Abstract: |
Three trenches were excavated across parkland into which a churchyard may be extended. Prior to the excavation earthworks visible within the area of the site had been interpreted as a possible hollow way and house platform, believed to relate to a medieval village abandoned when the park was created in the 16th century. No archaeological features were found to support this interpretation. The undulations in the ground appeared to mirror the natural rise and fall of the undisturbed clay. Possible furrows were encountered in two trenches which suggested that, prior to emparkment, the site was in arable use, perhaps within the fields of the medieval village rather than within the settlement.
