Abstract: |
Monitoring of pipeline construction was conducted on land near the Scheduled medieval port. The sub-surface deposits are probably permanently waterlogged and several timber stakes were recovered (some were submitted for C14 dating). These possibly represent piles along the waterfront, possibly the final phase of the late medieval quayside at Stonar. No evidence of later occupation of this marginal area, nor any salt pans were found. Silting of the Wantsum Channel appears to have begun during the 14th century when Stonar was an important port. This would have contributed to its demise. [Au(abr)] |
