Abstract: |
Archaeological recording was carried out during repair work within a church. Removal of the pew platform revealed what may have been the primary floor in the nave and south aisle following the construction of the south aisle in the 16th century. Laid above rubble and building debris, it comprised finely wrought hamstone slabs, paving the narrow passageways between box pews.A wider floor of lias slabs had been laid across the aisle. A stone base in this floor marked an earlier position of the font. Several graves were evident, some of which had been inserted beneath the floors between the box pews. Limited evidence of earlier graves, which would originally have lain within the churchyard, was also observed. No evidence of the structural sequence of the church was visible, beyond what was clear from the standing walls. [Au(adp)] |
