Abstract:
Archaeological investigations were undertaken during limited development within the area of a 12th century undercroft which was formerly part of the medieval hospital of St Leonard, reputedly the largest medieval hospital in England. Several phases of activity were identified. Phase I: evidence for 11th century dumping followed by the digging out and subsequent infilling of a large feature of unknown function. Phase II: the construction of the undercroft in the 12th century. Phase III: further building activity, not of the undercroft but probably associated. Elements of this activity included the digging of large post holes, possibly as part of a scaffolding system. Phase IV: elements of this phase related to the internal re-ordering of the undercroft, most likely in the early 16th century. Phase V: features were identified which it was thought were related to alterations to the internal form of the building after the Reformation. Phase VI: activity of this phase dated to the later 18th century and was largely restricted to the raising of floor levels and the sealing of these with a mortar floor. Phase VII: 19th century floor level raising. Phase VIII: activity of this phase related to modern works within the undercroft and included elements associated with toilets and a theatre club bar.
