Abstract: |
A geo-archaeological borehole survey was undertaken of the proposed development site. The borehole profile revealed between 0.65-4.5m of made ground across the floodplain, including infill of a former river channel. The made ground overlay between 0.82-6.00m of alluvium over gravel. Three alluvial horizons were recorded. The alluvial sediment largely comprised gleyed coarse sands from which a general history of the floodplain and channel alluviation could be ascertained. The coarse (sand) alluviation indicated relatively high-energy deposition over a long time period (i.e. a fast-flowing watercourse) and the lack of fine-grained alluvium and of humic and organic horizons tended to suggest a lack of stasis, and of long term stable conditions. In palaeo-environmental terms there was a low potential for the recovery of pollen to aid in the determination of the local vegetation history. Further, no dateable organic horizons were recovered which would have provided a chronological framework. The survey also demonstrated that there was a low potential for significant archaeological deposits to be buried by alluvium within the floodplain. [Au(abr)] |
