Abstract: |
A watching brief and topographic survey was concerned with groundworks associated with drainage works and associated civil engineering activity within two areas of relic mine working. The mines developed rapidly from the 1840's but were abandoned in 1888. Site A, within the Scheduled Monument, revealed information about a level part of the mine's drainage system. The topographic survey revealed a complex of mining and mining related features, including seven infilled shafts, the pylon bases for an aerial ropeway, a wheel pit and bob pit and the drainage level. Site B, just outside the Scheduled area, revealed that the surface deposits of the hillside were mainly composed of mining waste, and the topographic survey recorded the remains of four infilled shafts and erosion gullies.
