Abstract:
An excavation was carried out at a proposed development site where an earlier evaluation had revealed various features consistent with the presence of a saltern, or salt production mound. Residual prehistoric flintwork was recovered, but the earliest feature excavated was a ditch of probable early medieval date, suggesting attempts to drain the open marshland of the estuarine floodplain. Subsequently, washed silts and sands deriving from medieval salt manufacture had been deposited, forming a mound used intermittently from the 13th into the 16th centuries, apparently for the manufacture of salt. The mound showed evidence of sporadic flooding until the mid-16th century, by which time the River Adur had been fully embanked, and subsequently the land had been used, apparently seasonally, as pasture. A sawpit was in operation by the late 18th or early 19th century, possibly in connection with a documented wharf. The saltern mound joined the many examples known to have been in operation in the valley during the late Saxon and medieval periods, but was the first extensively excavated example and the first to produce building evidence; evidence for some form of structure was associated with each of the salt-making phases at Bramber.
