Abstract: |
A watching brief was undertaken during the laying of a new gas main within a redundant gas pipe. The laying of the new pipe required the excavation of 17 relatively small trenches. One deeper additional trench was excavated during the same programme to investigate a leaking feeder sewer. The technique adopted to replace the old gas main ensured that the bulk of the materials excavated related to old trench fill and modern road materials. Only two of the trenches revealed archaeological deposits. Interpretation of the archaeological deposits within these trenches proved difficult though it did seem reasonably clear that none appeared to relate to road metalling. [Au(abr)] |
