Abstract: |
A desktop assessment and photographic survey of the old sea wall was undertaken in advance of the construction of a new sea wall. The new sea wall was to be set back from the old in order to create a larger area of saltmarsh along the eastern side of the tidal part of the River Axe. This 'managed retreat' would provide a habitat for wildlife. The specific aim of the assessment was to establish the date, construction method and survival of the 18th/19th century sea wall and earlier sea defences affected by the construction work. A total of 15 sites were identified within the study area. Seven of the sites lay within the proposed 'managed retreat' site and of them three would be affected by the construction work. All the sites which were to be affected appeared to be post-medieval in date but some may have had earlier origins, two were sea defences including the old sea wall and one was a sluice in nature within the wall.
