Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of the proposed sites of a new hotel and an extension to an existing hotel, which lay within an Area of Archaeological Significance, identified that evidence of human activity from the prehistoric period to the present had been recorded in the vicinity. Significant Bronze Age remains comprising riverside timber trackways, platforms and revetments had been found adjacent to the proposal site, and evidence of Saxon settlement had been recorded nearby. A number of excavations had been undertaken in the vicinity of Barking Abbey, a SAM which lay to the north-east of the site, and medieval remains had been found beneath the existing Formule 1 Hotel. It was concluded that an archaeological evaluation at the proposal site would probably be required. [AIP] |
