Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a waste transfer station revealed that a small number of Mesolithic and Neolithic flints had been found in the surrounding area, and that extensive cropmark complexes had been recorded to the east. These were likely to have represented Iron Age and Romano-British field systems, farmsteads, settlements and trackways. Two Roman roads passed to the east of the proposal site, and Roman coins had been found in the area. Evidence of Anglo-Saxon occupation was inferred by place-name elements. Throughout the medieval and early post-medieval periods, the landscape had been essentially an agricultural one, although small-scale industry had become more common and intensive. A factory had been constructed at the proposal site in the 1960s or early 1970s, and had closed in c. 1994. Ground investigations had shown that the site was underlain by made ground with a thickness of 2.0-3.2m. Numerous underground culverts and drainage systems were present, and it was noted that any archaeological remains which may have existed would probably have been destroyed. No mitigation measures in connection with the proposed development were recommended. [AIP] |
