Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out at the proposed site of a residential development. Listed Buildings dating from the 16th, 17th and 19th centuries lay in the immediate vicinity of the site, and archaeological remains recorded nearby had included a 15th-16th century well. During the evaluation, a concentration of probable prehistoric features was identified within two of the trenches excavated, Trenches 3 and 4. The nature of the features in Trench 4 was unclear; there appeared to have been at least one broad ditch and two large pits. The interpretation of these as prehistoric was based on the presence of burnt and flaked flint material and the absence of finds from later periods. There was a similarity between the fills of these features and that of a pit feature within Trench 3, which contained flint material and two sherds of prehistoric pottery. Two probable post-holes adjacent to Queen Street formed the only evidence for early street frontage development. The dating evidence was inconclusive, but these were considered to have been medieval. The only other medieval feature was a possible ditch terminal which petered out into a gully. A number of post-medieval features were also excavated. [Au(adp)] |
