Abstract:
Geophysical survey had indicated a relatively low density of anomalies in the area of development but in view of the close proximity of a significant cropmark complex to the east of the site a watching brief of topsoil stripping was required as a condition on the planing consent. The watching brief identified four linear ditches of Late Iron Age or early Romano-British date overlain by medieval ridge and furrow and modern ploughsoil. The ditches were likely to have been a continuation of the cropmarks identified to the east of the excavated area. Finds recovered included a small assemblage of Late Iron Age or early Romano-British pottery, a fragment of Samian ware and a large piece of Mid to Late Iron Age smelting slag. [Au(abr)]
