Abstract:
A single trench was excavated as a planning condition prior to development, which exposed a thin alluvial layer above the natural river gravels with a thick overlying level make-up of redeposited natural sand and gravels of post-medieval date and a large amount of late 19th century domestic rubbish dumping. Cut into these dumps were two parallel red and yellow brick walls running northwest-southeast and associated floor surfaces. These features probably represented the ground floor of the building shown on the 1894-96 OS Map, adjacent to the Limehouse Cut Canal. The last main phase of activity represented was the demolition of the above building and at least one thick concrete crane base. [Au(abr)]
