Abstract: |
A recorded observation was undertaken of an engineers test-pit and the principal foundations of the new development in order to fulfil a condition upon planning consent. The deposits across the excavated area were surprisingly uniform with a relatively simple sequence of horizons:firstly, building debris and foundations; secondly, alluvial gravely clays which became more organic with depth and became more peat like in certain areas. The top half of the foundation pits consisted of deposits which were entirely man-made. Many of these were doubtless associated with the late Victorian settlement but the majority were related to the period when the area was a petrol service station. There were artefacts pre-dating the mid-Victorian period on the site. However, given the nature of the foundation pits, the method of excavation and waterlogged state of the lower levels, this was not entirely surprsing. One foundation pit had evidence for the survival of 3 horizontal fragments of timber. These could be the remainss of some structural features associated with activities that were undertaken adjacent to the River Colne. Without a clearance of the surrounding area it was impossable to ascertain their character or date. [Au(adp)] |
