Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken in response to a condition upon planning permission for the construction of a new Aldi Foodstore and associated parking. The assessment identified that the most significant archaeological potential would arise from the alluvial deposits recorded typically around 1.7m beneath the existing ground surface. Within this sequence substantial peat deposits up to 4m thick may have represented the presence of a former channel while an earlier marine regression may have been indicated by the presence of a lower peat deposit. Examination of similar deposits in the Thamesmead and Greenwich area had identified archaeological remains in the peat and provided both Mesolithic and Bronze Age dates. During the period of peat formation, the area would have been marginal land and could potentially have been exploited by early communities. The suitable conditions for organic preservation in the peat had led to the discovery of prehistoric wooden trackways and structures on several sites. The alluvial sequence also had a high potential for providing information on the prehistoric and later topographic development of the Thamesmead area and could provide important archae-environmental evidence. Detailed analysis of a peat profile could provide an accurate picture of changing environments. The report concluded that the potential archaeological effects of the development proposals were confined to the area of the store building and the sequence of alluvial deposits. It was recommended that the potential of these deposits in the area be further assessed through a programme of field evaluation. [Au(adp)] |
