Abstract: |
Recording of machine trenches followed by limited manual excavation was undertaken on the site of a former garage on the north-east edge of Newark town centre. The trenches revealed about 1m of made ground overlying a sequence of two buried soils, the upper containing post-medieval pottery and the lower containing medieval pottery, both in small quantities. After the removal of these, post-holes and ditches were seen cut into the gravel natural, some of which were sampled and proved to be of medieval date. Some appeared to be structural, and there was a distinctive alignment of many of these features, at an angle to the Fosse Way, but parallel to the property boundaries first mapped accurately in 1790, suggesting that these boundaries were of at least medieval origin.
